Norther est un groupe de melodic death metal Finlandais. Le style de Norther est similaire à celui de Children of Bodom en moins mélodique et plus sombre, le groupe a reconnu que Children of Bodom était l'une de leurs influences.
Le groupe débuta au début de l'année 1996 sous le nom de Requiem. Il était composé du guitariste Petri Lindroos et du batteur Toni Hallio, accompagnés par d'autres musiciens. Au début de son existence, le groupe manquait de lieux pour répéter, mais vers la fin de l'année 1997, le guitariste Alexander Kuoppala (ex-Children of Bodom) leur trouva une excellente salle à Lepakko qui leur permit de jouer; ils décidèrent alors de changer leur nom Requiem en Decayed. Malheureusement leur salle de répétition fut démolie, et les musiciens qui jouaient avec Lindroos et Hallio, démotivés, quittèrent Decayed.
Après quelque mois infructueux, le groupe finit par trouver un nouveau lieu de pratique, et se mit à la recherche de nouveaux membres. Malgré plusieurs auditions, ils ne trouvèrent pas de membres capables de se mêler à leur style, et le groupe vivota jusqu'au début de l'an 2000, lorqu'ils firent la rencontre du guitariste Kristian Ranta. Le groupe redevint actif, et grâce à l'aide de deux frères, amis de Lindroos - Sebastian and Joakim Ekroos - le groupe décida d'enregistrer une démo pour le première fois sous le nom de Norther. Cette démo leur permit alors de signer un contrat avec Spinefarm Records.
Puis, après plusieurs problèmes internes, les frères Ekross quittèrent le groupe et furent remplacés par des membres stables: le bassiste Jukka Koskinen et le clavieriste Tuomas Planman.
Leur premier album Dreams of Endless War, sorti en 2002, fut très bien accueilli par la presse spécialisée. Norther commença alors à faire des tournées dans les environs de Helsinki. Le groupe devint très prolifique, les sorties d'albums se suivirent rapidement : Mirror of Madness (2003), Death Unlimited (2004), et Till Death Unites Us (2006), tout comme les singles Released (2002), Unleash Hell (2003), Spreading Death (2003), et Scream (2006), le MiniDVD single Spreading Death, et un EP appelé Solution 7 (2005).N(2008)
En octobre 2005, le batteur Toni Hallio quitta le groupe, laissant le guitariste/vocaliste Lindroos comme le seul membre original. Hallio fut remplacé par Heikki Saari, batteur de Virtuocity.
Le guitariste chanteur du groupe, Petri Lindroos, joue également dans un autre groupe de Metal Folklorique, Ensiferum, où il occupe le même poste. Leur bassiste, pour sa part, joue dans le groupe d' Epic Death Metal Wintersun.
